0774eaaf0c util: Require integers for SaturatingAdd() and AdditionOverflow() (Hodlinator)
a815e3e262 rpc: Correct type for tx_sigops (Hodlinator)
Pull request description:
* Correct copy-paste error in RPC code
* Require proper integers for `SaturatingAdd()` and `AdditionOverflow()` in src/util/overflow.h
These changes increase the type safety of the code and were done while exploring increasing the type-safety of `CAmount` (currently just a `typedef` of `int64_t`).
The first commit has nothing to do with overflow but is along for the ride if reviewers agree.

Read configured mining options once during startup instead of parsing
options like -blockmaxweight each time a block template is generated.
Store the parsed startup options as BlockCreateOptions. Members left unset
keep representing unset options; hardcoded defaults are applied by
FlattenMiningOptions() before the options are used. IPC overrides and node
defaults can then be merged with the same option type used by
BlockAssembler.
Co-authored-by: Ryan Ofsky <ryan@ofsky.org>
Move block template defaulting into helper functions for
BlockCreateOptions. FlattenMiningOptions() fills hardcoded defaults and
MergeMiningOptions() overlays defaults without replacing caller-provided
values.
Use the shared option type in BlockAssembler so IPC callers and internal
callers can pass through the same options path. This commit does not
change behavior, except for dropping the "Specified " prefix from startup
option error messages.
Keep the -blockmintxfee ParseMoney check in ReadMiningArgs() instead of
CheckMiningOptions(), because CheckMiningOptions() only sees the parsed
CFeeRate value and not the original string.

The previous commit made CreateNewBlock() ignore the
include_dummy_extranonce flag (OP_0 is now appended only at heights
<= 16 to satisfy bad-cb-length, regardless of caller-supplied options).
Remove the now-unused field from BlockCreateOptions and clean up all
the call sites that still set it (RPC, bench, fuzz, test setups).
Since this class defines the functionality of the RPC method, not
just its help text, this better reflects reality.

At startup, if the needs to catch up, connected mining clients will
receive a flood of new templates as new blocks are connected.
Fix this by adding a cooldown argument to createNewBlock(). When set
to true, block template creation is briefly paused while the best
header chain is ahead of the tip.
This wait only happens when the best header extends the current tip,
to ignore competing branches.
Additionally, cooldown waits for isInitialBlockDownload() to latch to
false, which happens when there is less than a day of blocks left to sync.
When cooldown is false createNewBlock() returns immediately. The argument
is optional, because many tests are negatively impacted by this
mechanism, and single miner signets could end up stuck if no block
was mined for a day.
The getblocktemplate RPC also opts out, because it would add a delay
to each call.

Pull request description:
This PR increments the field number of the `Init.makeMining` method and makes the old `makeMining` method return an error, so IPC mining clients not using the latest schema file will get an error and not be able to access the Mining interface.
Normally, there shouldn't be a need to break compatibility this way, but the mining interface has evolved a lot since it was first introduced, with old clients using the original methods less stable and performant than newer clients. So now is a good time to introduce a cutoff, drop deprecated methods, and stop supporting old clients which can't function as well.
Bumping the field number is also an opportunity to make other improvements that would be awkward to implement compatibly:
- Making Cap'n Proto default parameter and field values match default values of corresponding C++ methods and structs.
- Adding missing Context parameters to Mining.createNewBlock and checkBlock methods so these methods will be executed on separate execution threads and not block the Cap'n Proto event loop thread.
More details about these changes are in the commit messages.

even though we have a distinction between `BLOCK_FAILED_VALID` and `BLOCK_FAILED_CHILD` in the codebase,
we don't use it for anything. Whenever we check for BlockStatus, we use `BLOCK_FAILED_MASK` which encompasses both of them.
Since there is no functional difference between `BLOCK_FAILED_VALID` and `BLOCK_FAILED_CHILD` and it's added
code complexity to correctly categorise them (ex: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/31405#discussion_r1914366243, https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/16856#issuecomment-565506585), we could just remove it.
Looking for conceptual feedback on whether it's better to improve handling of `BLOCK_FAILED_CHILD` in the codebase or remove `BLOCK_FAILED_CHILD`.
Of less relevance, but it would also fix a `reconsiderblock` crash that could happen in the situation mentioned in https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/32173#issuecomment-2767030982

Previously the coinbase transaction generated by our miner code was
not used downstream, because the getblocktemplate RPC excludes it.
Since the Mining IPC interface was introduced in #30200 we do expose
this dummy coinbase transaction. In Stratum v2 several parts of it
are communicated downstream, including the scriptSig.
This commit removes the dummy extraNonce from the coinbase scriptSig
in block templates requested via IPC. This limits the scriptSig
to what is essential for consensus (BIP34) and removes the need for
external mining software to remove the dummy, or even ignore
the scriptSig we provide and generate it some other way. This
could cause problems if a future soft fork requires additional
data to be committed here.
A test is added to verify the new IPC behavior.
It achieves this by introducing an include_dummy_extranonce
option which defaults to false with all test code updated to
set it to true. Because this option is not exposed via IPC,
callers will no longer see it.
The caller needs to ensure that for blocks 1 through 16
they pad the scriptSig in order to avoid bad-cb-length.

fa66e2d07a refactor: [rpc] Remove confusing and brittle integral casts (MarcoFalke)
Pull request description:
When constructing an UniValue from integral values, historically (long ago), in some cases casts where needed. With the current UniValue constructor, only very few are actually needed.
Keeping the unused casts around is:
* confusing, because code readers do not understand why they are needed
* brittle, because some may copy them into new places, where they will lead to hard-to-find logic bugs, such as the ones fixed in pull https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/34112
So fix all issues by removing them, except for a few cases, where casting was required:
* `ret.pushKV("coinbase", static_cast<bool>(coin->fCoinBase));`, or
* `static_cast<std::underlying_type_t<decltype(info.nServices)>>(info.nServices)`.
This hardening refactor does not fix any bugs and does not change any behavior.

Replace the last few instances of `.count() != 0` and `.count() == 0` and `.count()` patterns with the more expressive C++20 `.contains()` method:
* `std::set<std::string>` in `getblocktemplate` RPC;
* `std::map<std::string, ...>` in `transaction_tests`;
* other bare `std::unordered_set` and `std::map` count calls.
With no remaining violations, enable the `readability-container-contains`
clang-tidy check to prevent future regressions.
The changes made here were:

Modernizes interface by not forcing users to deal with raw pointers,
without adding copying overhead. Generalizes the logic of whether
we return by value or by optional/pointer.
In cases where functions take a `const std::string&` and it would
be too much work to update them, a string copy is made (which was
already happening anyway).

By using shared_ptr, we make the shared ownership explicit and allow users to safely use the block outside of the callback scope. By using a const-ref shared_ptr, no atomic reference count cost is incurred if a subscriber does not require block ownership.
For example: in #30595, this would allow us to drop the `kernel_BlockPointer` handle entirely, and generalize everything into `kernel_Block`. This PoC is implemented in https://github.com/stickies-v/bitcoin/commits/kernel/remove-blockpointer/.

### Performance
I have added a benchmark in a [separate branch](https://github.com/stickies-v/bitcoin/commits/2025-07/validation-interface-ownership-benched/), to ensure this change does not lead to a problematic performance regression. Since most of the overhead comes from the subscribers, I have added scenarios for `One`, `Two`, and `Ten` subscribers. From these results, it appears there is no meaningful performance difference on my machine.

validation interface event publicly either cumbersome or with significant
copy overhead.

Comments are expanded.
Return BlockValidationState instead of passing a reference.
Lock Chainman mutex instead of cs_main.
Remove redundant chainparams and pindexPrev arguments.
Drop defaults for checking proof-of-work and merkle root.
The ContextualCheckBlockHeader check is moved to after CheckBlock,
which is more similar to normal validation where context-free checks
are done first.
Validation failure reasons are no longer printed through LogError(),
since it depends on the caller whether this implies an actual bug
in the node, or an externally sourced block that happens to be invalid.
When called from getblocktemplate, via BlockAssembler::CreateNewBlock(),
this method already throws an std::runtime_error if validation fails.
Additionally it moves the inconclusive-not-best-prevblk check from RPC
code to TestBlockValidity.
There is no behavior change when callling getblocktemplate with proposal.
Previously this would return a BIP22ValidationResult which can throw for
state.IsError(). But CheckBlock() and the functions it calls only use
state.IsValid().
The final assert is changed into Assume, with a LogError.

This can be reproduced according to the developer notes with something
like

Also, the header related changes were done manually.
The term "force" is ambiguous and not used in BIP9 where the ! rule
prefix is introduced.
Additionally, #29039 renamed gbt_vb_name to gbt_force_name which
might increase the confusion.

Pull request description:
This PR prevents Mining interface methods from sometimes crashing when called during startup before a tip is connected. It also makes other improvements like making more RPC methods usable from the GUI. Specifically this PR:
- Adds an `Assume` check to disallow passing negative timeout values to `Mining::waitTipChanged`
- Makes `waitfornewblock`, `waitforblock` and `waitforblockheight` RPC methods usable from the GUI when `-server=1` is not set.
- Changes `Mining::waitTipChanged` to return `optional<BlockRef>` instead of `BlockRef` and return `nullopt` instead of crashing if there is a timeout or if the node is shut down before a tip is connected.
- Changes `Mining::waitTipChanged` to not time out before a tip is connected, so it is convenient and safe to call during startup, and only returns `nullopt` on early shutdowns.
- Changes `Mining::createNewBlock` to block and wait for a tip to be connected if it is called on startup instead of crashing. Also documents that it will return null on early shutdowns.
This allows `waitNext()` (added in https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/31283) to safely assume `TipBlock()` isn't `null`, not even during a scenario of early shutdown.
Finally this PR clarifies long poll behaviour, mostly by adding code comments, but also through an early `break`.

Move the comparison to hashWatchedChain inside the while loop.
Although this early return prevents the GetTransactionsUpdated()
call in cases where the tip updates, it's only done to improve
readability. The check itself is very cheap (although a more
useful check might not be).
Also add code comments.
The waitTipChanged() now returns nullopt if the node is shutting down.
Previously it would return the last known tip during shutdown, but
this creates an ambiguous circumstance in the scenario where the
node is started and quickly shutdown, before notifications().TipBlock()
is set.
The getblocktemplate, waitfornewblock and waitforblockheight RPC
are updated to handle this. Existing behavior is preserved.

We reserve 4000 weight units for coinbase transaction in `DEFAULT_BLOCK_MAX_WEIGHT`

And also reserve additional `4000` weight units in the default `BlockCreationOptions` struct.
7590e93bc7/src/node/types.h (L36-L40)
**Motivation**
- This issue was first noticed during a review here https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/11100#discussion_r136157411)
- It was later reported in issue #21950.
- I also came across the bug while writing a test for building the block template. I could not create a block template above `3,992,000` in the block assembler, and this was not documented anywhere. It took me a while to realize that we were reserving space for the coinbase transaction weight twice.
---
This PR fixes this by consolidating the reservation to be in a single location in the codebase.
This PR then adds a new startup option `-blockreservedweight` whose default is `8000` that can be used to lower or increase the block reserved weight for block header, txs count, coinbase tx.

- The reserved weight of the coinbase transaction is an estimate and
may not reflect the exact value; it can be lower.
- It should be clear that `currentblockweight` includes the reserved coinbase transaction weight.
whereas `currentblocktx` does not account for the coinbase transaction count.
- Also clarify `m_last_block_num_txs` and `m_last_block_weight`
Previously in getblocktemplate only curtime took the timewarp rule into account.
Mining pool software could use either, though in general it should use curtime.
Rather than having the RPC code have knowledge about how BIP9 is
implemented, create a reporting function in the versionbits code, and
limit the RPC code to coverting the result of that into the appropriate
output for getblocktemplate.
This is a documentation-only change following up on suggestions made in the
#30526 review.
Motivation for this change is that I was recently reviewing #31583, which
reminded me how confusing the arithmetic blob code was and made me want to
write better comments.
